Q. Should a stain or sealant be applied to the deck?
A. A clear sealant does not protect against the sun's UV rays. It will shed
water for a while but the sun's rays will be damaging the wood and
causing premature fatigue of the deck wood. A good stain will shed
water and protect against the UV rays of the sun.
Q. Should exterior paint be applied to the deck?
A. Paint is a tricky substance. Paint may shed water for years but if it
cracks and it is not noticed, water will pass through the crack and rot the
wood below. By the time the damaged wood is found, there could be a
lot of damaged wood.
Q. Can U.S. Power Washing, L.L.C. power wash my deck and then I
apply the stain and save some money?
A. Of course!
Q. Do you mark up the cost of stain?
A. No. You pay what I pay.
Q. Can brand new pressure treated lumber be stained right away?
A. Sure but the stain will not bond with the wood very well. It is best to
wait a month before power washing and staining a new deck.
Q. Should the underside of my deck be stained?
A. Not really. It would seem aesthetically nice but in reality, the bottom
of the wood should be bare so that if any water gets into the wood, it can
have an escape route. Also, UV rays do not damage that area so there is
no reason to protect it.
Q. How do I know that my deck needs to be power washed and stained?
A. Take a cup of water and dump it on the deck in several places. If the
water beads up and stays that way, your deck is fine. If the water soaks
into the wood within 5 seconds, it is time to power wash and re-stain your
deck.
